WHAT’S NEW WALKTHROUGH

Following the success of the Archives, Feature Discovery received an influx of feature awareness tip requests. Thus, I proposed a design enhancement to the Archives. Tip Grouping allows the Archives to house an abundant amount of tips all while cutting down on long-term engineering effort.

“ With the ability to launch more tips through the Archives, we now have a sudden increase of feature awareness tip requests from several teams. I don’t think it’s plausible to have a long, running list of tips all on one page. ”

— MINGTAO WU, PRODUCT MANAGER ON FEATURE DISCOVERY

MINGTAO, WE HAVE A PROBLEM

The tips are disorganized, making it hard for the user to locate them quickly.
The launch of the Archives introduced our first tip collection, "What's New", initially containing more individual tips than collections. As requests to promote features increased, the Archives enabled us to approve 3x as many tips as before. However, the increasing number of unorganized tips became overwhelming, highlighting the need for better organization.

ORGANIZING THE TIPS

The first step in solving this problem was to organize the existing tips into new tip collections. I worked very closely with my product manager in creating names for the collections as well as carefully curating the tips by placing them into the collection that made the most sense.

A SUBTLE IMPROVEMENT

As we had recently launched a new page in a completely new style, I aimed to make this enhancement as seamless as possible for our users, avoiding the need for them to learn something new so soon. I collaborated with the User Research team to gather insights after the initial release of the Archives and the What’s New collection. With this information, along with my ideas and concerns, I started brainstorming on the FigJam board.

BUT FIRST, COPY

Before finalizing the design, I coordinated with my copywriter. The envisioned design required an extra page in the Archives, so I needed to ensure that all copy where the Feature Discovery Tips were shown matched. This was critical for user understanding, ensuring they knew the content in the Archives matched that in the Activity Card. It was also crucial for the engineers, as aligning the copy facilitated mapping it within the new design.

INTERACTION DESIGN

After creating the 2 main pages for Tip Grouping, I designed the overall framework. I collaborated closely with the Design Systems team to develop the interaction flow, ensuring that the new behavior met their standards as well as ours. I conducted a total of 5 meetings with them over 1 month.

TIP ASSET ILLUSTRATIONS

We wanted to get a move on tip grouping as soon as possible so that within the next major update all of the tips would be in a collection. I took it upon myself to create the assets for the tips of some of the collections, such as Shortcuts. Typically we work with the illustration team in Tokyo for these, but the lead time ranges from 3-4 months. This helped speed up the process and minimize the workload within our internal team. I created 3 sets of 10 illustrations. One set for US-English, another for UK-English, and the last for Japanese copy.

IMPACT + THOUGHTS

The current design

AND, SCENE

The final enhancement consists of two primary pages. Page 1 is the list of all of the collections. When selecting a tip collection from Page 1, then it will lead to Page 2 where it lists all of the individual tips within that specific collection. While this design may be considered “new”, it still holds the familiarity and similar behavior as the existing Archive page, which is exactly what we wanted.

The new design

THIS PROJECT IS STILL IN DEVELOPMENT, BUT I AM CONFIDENT IT WILL...

01 Encourage the user

This initiative will enable users to quickly and efficiently find and read tips. By improving tip accessibility, users will find it easier to locate the information they need, thus encouraging them to use the Archives more frequently.

02 Increase user engagement

Based on my findings and collaboration with the User Research team, we discovered that the most visited tip in the existing Archives space was the What's New collection. Therefore, we believe that creating Tip Collections will solve our problem, as users will be more likely to explore other tips once they are organized into collections.

03 Set Feature Discovery up for success

As the Archives grow, we will need to have a structured framework that will be beneficial for the long run. This will help the team, most especially the engineers, not have to change the feature drastically each time the space expands.
